Why Does One Earbud Sound Louder? How to Fix Uneven Volume and Restore Your Rhythm

We’ve all been there: you’re mid-workout, the beat is about to drop, and suddenly you realize your left ear is doing all the heavy lifting while the right sounds like it’s broadcasting from a distant cave. It’s frustrating, it breaks your focus, and if you’re using your earbuds for a high-intensity session, it can actually throw off your sense of balance.

At Jesebang, we design our TWS earbuds to deliver a symmetrical, immersive soundstage that keeps you in the zone. However, because earbuds are precision instruments exposed to sweat, dust, and daily wear, uneven sound is a common hurdle. The good news? It’s rarely a sign of a “blown” speaker. More often than not, it’s a simple fix involving software settings or basic maintenance.

Before you consider a replacement, let’s walk through the expert steps to recalibrate your audio experience.

The Most Common Culprit: Physical Obstructions

It’s not glamorous, but the #1 cause of uneven volume is earwax and debris. Because earbuds sit deep in the ear canal to provide a secure seal (especially our ergonomic ear-hook models), they are prone to buildup. Even a microscopic layer of wax on the mesh grille can significantly dampen the sound pressure.

How to Clean Them Safely:

  • Remove the Silicone Tips: Take off the ear tips and soak them in warm, soapy water.
  • The Dry Brush Method: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a dedicated cleaning tool to gently brush the metal mesh. Always hold the earbud with the mesh facing down so gravity pulls the debris out rather than pushing it further in.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol: Use a slightly damp (not dripping) Q-tip with 70% isopropyl alcohol to disinfect the surface.

Check Your Device’s Audio Balance

Sometimes the “glitch” isn’t in the hardware, but in your smartphone’s accessibility settings. It is surprisingly easy to accidentally slide the balance toggle to one side while fumbling with volume menus.

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Tap on Audio adjustment or Hearing enhancements.
  3. Ensure the Left/Right sound balance slider is dead center.

On iPhone (iOS):

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual.
  2. Look for the Balance slider and make sure it is positioned at 0.00.

Reset the Bluetooth Connection

Bluetooth 5.3 technology, which we use in many Jesebang models, is incredibly stable, but software “handshakes” can occasionally go wrong. This results in one earbud receiving a weaker signal or failing to sync its internal volume with the other.

The Pro Fix: “Forget” the device in your Bluetooth settings, turn off your phone’s Bluetooth, and perform a Hard Reset on the earbuds (usually by holding the touch sensors while they are in the charging case). Re-pairing from scratch often forces the chips to recalibrate their master-slave relationship, restoring perfect stereo balance.

Moisture and the “Vacuum” Effect

If you’ve just finished a grueling, sweaty run, moisture might be trapped inside the earbud’s nozzle or the vent holes. Jesebang earbuds feature high IP7 waterproof ratings, meaning the internals are protected, but water sitting on the outside of the driver membrane can physically muffle the sound.

The Fix: Gently tap the earbud against your palm with the speaker facing down. If that doesn’t work, leave them out of the charging case in a dry environment for a few hours.

Pro-tip: Avoid using a hairdryer, as excessive heat can damage the delicate lithium-ion batteries.

Mono Audio Settings

Check to see if your phone has “Mono Audio” enabled. While this shouldn’t technically make one side louder, it merges both channels into one. If one of your audio files was recorded with a heavy stereo bias, switching back to Stereo mode (and ensuring “Mono” is off in Accessibility settings) can often resolve perceived imbalances.

The Jesebang Advantage: Built for Longevity

If you find yourself constantly battling uneven sound with older headphones, it might be time for an upgrade. Jesebang earbuds are engineered with ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation) and large dynamic drivers designed to maintain output consistency even after months of heavy use. Our secure ear-hook designs also ensure the driver stays aligned with your ear canal, preventing the “fading” sound that happens when standard buds slip out of place.

By following these maintenance steps, you can extend the life of your gear and ensure that your playlist hits just as hard in the left ear as it does in the right. Keep them clean, keep them calibrated, and keep moving.
